Provo is a well-known name in many industries such as entrepreneurship and music — and now the international automotive industry.

As Kia Motors unveiled its new provo concept last week at the Geneva Motor Show, the name choice has left some in the auto industry scratching their heads, while champions of Provo’s reputation bask in the international attention.

“So, is provo thought-provoking or curse-invoking?” asked Edward Loh, Motor Trend executive editor. What does the word “provo” stand for, exactly?

Universe: LDS Women Depression

A mother locks herself in her closet, where the kids cannot hear, although she doubts her own strength to form the words:

“Please God, let someone get into this subject and see that it’s real, it isn’t fake. That it isn’t just women who are selfish or women who are on the fringe of the Church or don’t have a testimony or aren’t serving. Let that pain we feel, that emptiness, let someone speak for us, finally.”

Amy (name changed) prayed for years to witness this kind of study.

Amy, age 41, is one of 20 Utah Valley residents diagnosed with depression who shared their experiences with Dr. Kristine Doty, assistant professor of behavioral science at Utah Valley University. Doty’s keynote address kicked off UVU’s Mental Health Symposium, held Thursday, Jan. 31.

Jupiter and the moon to share astronomical crossing

NASA representatives told Utah residents to look to the east Monday (Jan 21) night and watch the moon cross the night sky.

As the moon rises high in the south it will cover up the planet Jupiter.  The two bodies should be close together on Monday evening and will move together throughout the night.

Patrick Wiggins, NASA solar system ambassador to Utah, said Jupiter will be easily visible without a telescope even from areas with city lights. He advised those viewing from a rural area with a telescope to also watch for the cluster of stars known as the Seven Sisters, or Subaru in Japanese. The cluster will cross the sky just ahead of the moon and Jupiter.

The South Towne Expo Center filled with car enthusiasts and prospective shoppers over the holiday weekend for the annual Utah International Auto Expo. However, South Towne was not filled with exciting new concepts and exotics.

Due to the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) opening to the public on the same weekend, manufacturers were forced to keep their concepts in Detroit even though they made their public debut last week during NAIAS press days. However, timing of the Utah show makes it a great family weekend outing and an ideal setting for buyers to shop current models without going out in the cold.

Nik Putnam, a sophomore studying criminal justice at UVU, is considering trading his 2009 Mazda 3 for a newer Mazdaspeed3. He took the chance this weekend to compare all the Mazdaspeed3′s competitors under one roof.

A report from AAA shows the average price of gasoline is 50 cents lower than one month ago. At an average of $2.90 per gallon, Utah prices are now the lowest in the nation.

According to Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokesperson, Utah gas prices are not always so low compared to the national average. “There is a trend in gasoline pricing in Utah which typically has us paying some of the highest prices in the warmer months — spring, summer and fall — and then paying some of the lowest prices in the country in the winter months. This year seems to follow that pattern.”
